Aliou Cissé, the end of advertising

Senegal coach for almost a decade, Aliou Cissé was not reappointed. His departure was publicized on Wednesday.

Big surprise on the Senegal side that the Federation announced on Wednesday that it was separating from Aliou Cissé. Selection of March 2015, the former Paris Saint-Germain left his mark on the history of the Lions of Teranga when he won the 2021 African Cup of Nations at their head. While he had An option to extend Cissé for one year, the Senegalese minister decided not to activate it, as confirmed The Team.

It is therefore with a flattering record of seventy victories, twenty-four draws and thirteen defeats on the clock that Aliou Cissé turns the page of the selection. For its part, the sports media indicated that this decision by the State was a total surprise internally. However, the Lions’ recent results were not as flamboyant as usual. And it was probably them who caused this unexpected departure. Currently second in its qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup, Senegal especially experienced an elimination in the round of 16 of the last CAN against Côte d’Ivoire, future winner of the competition.

Purpose if not reached

In a press release published Wednesday, the Senegalese (Site notre blog d’information) Federation confirmed that the decision not to activate the optional year was taken by the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Madam Khady Diene Gaye, for reasons of
“failure to achieve assigned objectives”,
“Regression of (the) National team in the FIFA Ranking and risk of defeat between (the) National Selection and the Senegalese in general”.

The timing of this decision is the same as previously, although it was decided that the announcement would be made by Aliou on October 15. An interim staff is quickly put in place to assist in the appointment of a new selection.
