2nd League: HSV follows suit against Greuther Fürth – long-distance promotion duel with Heidenheim

Two dismissals

Hamburger SV saved their chances of direct promotion to the Bundesliga by beating SpVgg Greuther Fürth and at least secured third place in the table and relegation. In the sold-out Volksparkstadion, 56,537 spectators watched a 2-1 (1-0) win over the Franconians. Miro Muheim (27th minute) and László Bénes (69th penalty) scored for HSV. Lukas Petkov (84th) shortened for Fürth.

In Sunday’s final second division game at SV Sandhausen, Hamburger Bakery Jatta missed out with a yellow-red card, as did Ludovit Reis, who picked up his fifth yellow card in the first half. Fürth’s Dickson Abiama saw the red card shortly before the end. With this victory, HSV are one point behind second-placed Heidenheim.

With a 2-2 draw between Arminia Bielefeld and SC Paderborn, the guests celebrated their stay in the class even before kick-off. In a match with a lot of fights, HSV tried to control the game, but repeatedly had problems with inaccuracies in the possession and pressing of Fürther. The guests had the first chance, but Ragnar Ache (25th) flicked the ball over Hamburg’s goal from close range. On the other side, Muheim took advantage of a mistake made by Fürth goalkeeper Andreas Linde to take the lead.

In the second half, Fürth increasingly took the initiative. Nevertheless, HSV focused on offense. First Sonny Kittel (61st) narrowly missed Fürth’s goal from 16 yards after an assist from Robert Glatzel, then the midfielder directed a magnificent heel-heel at Glatzel, who descended into the penalty area after contact with Gian-Luca Itter – penalty. Substitute Bénes converted him powerfully in the middle. Glatzel (79′) only hit the post after a misunderstanding in Fürth. Shortly before the end, Petkov overcame HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer-Fernandes after Hamburg could not clear the ball from their own penalty area.
