Niko Kovac: Van den Ven could stay at VfL Wolfsburg – congratulations to Felix Nmecha

Is Spurs’ offer too low?

Coach Niko Kovac is confident that VfL Wolfsburg will take « another step forward this year » after the European Cup was missed on the final day of the 2022/23 season due to a home loss to relegated Hertha BSC (1-2). The 51-year-old is still hoping for his most valuable player Micky van de Ven with a market value of €30m.

« Micky is an integral part of this team. A player who has developed extremely well in recent years, with enormous potential, » Kovac said on ‘Sky’ of the 22-year-old centre-back, who reportedly agreed on a move with Tottenham Hotspur – or so ‘De Telegraaf’ reported in the Netherlands in early July. Kovac: « I have the impression that he is happy, he sees himself here and he will take one more step this season so that he can then possibly recommend himself to his national team for the European Championship. »

Van de Ven only extended his contract at Wolfsburg in March until 2027, but announced after the end of the season: « Of course I feel very comfortable at Wolfsburg. So I don’t mind playing another year at Wolfsburg. But if I have the chance to leave, I would like to do so. » Before Kovac’s statements, sporting director Marcel Schäfer had already pointed out that the U21 international Oranje had « nothing on the table » in terms of concrete offers, « with which we have to deal. » According to the « WAZ », there was an offer, but it was far too low. Wolfsburg wouldn’t sell van de Ven for less than €40m.

VfL Wolfsburg’s Kovac praises Felix Nmecha – Other possible transfers

No wonder, with the sale of Felix Nmecha (22) to Borussia Dortmund for 30 million euros, the « Wolves » have so far a positive transfer balance. And this despite the fact that professionals like Moritz Jenz (24), Vaclav Cerny (25), Tiago Tomás (21) and Cédric Zesiger (25) joined the team for 29 million euros. Kovac had nothing but praise for the national player: « I would have liked to keep him, that’s very clear. He’s a great boy who can become a world-class (Site notre bureau spécialisé)er. It was his first season. The development he’s had is exceptionally good, not only at the club, but it’s also put him in the spotlight and in the national team.

Nmechas’ transfer, which was heavily criticized due to the homophobic and transphobic videos shared by the midfielder on Instagram, is also something to be happy about at VfL, Kovac said: « We have developed a player, we have brought forward a player who can now say he took his first steps at Wolfsburg under this staff. I believe he now has a new challenge at Dortmund, on a whole new level. championship. You have to prove yourself. He will, I’m sure. That’s why we’re happy to have been a small part of his development. »

Kovac positively rates his own transfer efforts. Wolfsburg was able to « strengthen in many areas », « precisely because we brought in two new players in defence. We brought in two wingers in front who are very dangerous in goal, but who can also resolve a one-on-one situation as a result. That’s what we need because (Site notre bureau spécialisé) is about quality. But (Site notre bureau spécialisé) is also about a mentality. That’s in play. We are that way by nature and but the players have to do it too. And hopefully we can take another step forward with the new players. »

Kovac hasn’t ruled out that ‘one or the other’ could still happen towards the end of the transfer phase. On the access side, Robin Gosens (29) was recently associated with Wolfsburg. The left-back has now stressed that he can well imagine staying at Inter Milan. VfL are also expected to advertise intensively for Stade Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer (25). Besides van de Ven, midfield talent Aster Vranckx (20) is also interested, and Maxence Lacroix (23) has also recently been linked with a departure.
