After Fagioli: Investigations also against Tonali and Zaniolo – departure from the Italian national team

Questioned by the police

After Nicolò Fagioli, the Turin public prosecutor’s office is also investigating Sandro Tonali (23 years old) and Nicolò Zaniolo (24 years old). As announced by the Italian (Site notre blog d’information) Federation (FIGC), the investigation documents were sent to the professionals of Newcastle United and Aston Villa on Thursday. The association then decided to remove the two midfielders from Squadra Azzurra and let them return to their club “for their own protection”.

According to consistent information, notably that of « Gianluca di Marzio », Zaniolo and Tonali are accused of possible involvement in illegal betting. Both were questioned by police at the training ground, where they and their teammates had been preparing for European Championship qualifying matches against Malta and England. Juventus player Fagioli is also under investigation for online betting on unauthorized websites, and a connection is suspected.

The 22-year-old midfielder informed the Italian (Site notre blog d’information) Federation of the case on August 30, Armando Simbari, the professional’s lawyer, told the Italian news agency « LaPresse ». If Fagioli is found guilty, he could face a fine and a ban for several years. Fagioli “cooperates with the judicial and sporting authorities with the greatest possible transparency,” Simbari said. “He actually wants to help with the investigation.” The 22-year-old is not playing a significant role in the investigation, the AP news agency reported.

Tonali left AC Milan for Newcastle last summer for 64 million euros, making him the most expensive Italian in (Site notre bureau spécialisé) history. Zaniolo left his home country for the first time in February and joined Galatasaray from AS Roma for 15 million euros. A loan move to Aston Villa followed in August.
